Triund, trek to triund

Triund is one of the most beautiful hill stations in India, blessed for not being so accessible. Blessed in a way that in order to explore it’s beauty one has to trek all the way from McLeodganj, Dharamsala. You can’t take your cars up the hill as you can do in Shimla or Manali. It’s still serene and exotic and you can see snow filled mountains right when you reach the top. Usually people avoid trekking & don’t get to see the majestic locations but if you are in good shape, I would recommend you to trek to Triund before it looses it’s charm as many people have started visiting there in last couple of years.

Trek to Triund, Triund trek

What we did?

We booked a cab from Delhi and drove to McLeodganj, Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh thinking we would reach McLeodganj within 10hours at the max but that was not the case. We started at about 12 midnight and reached McLeodganj at 2pm the next day which was quite disappointing in the first place. This was all because of the heavy jam on the Delhi by pass road. It felt like entire Delhi was going out of town due to long weekend.

The day we reached was planned for our visit to Bhagsu waterfall so just when we reached, we quickly booked a room and started walking towards the waterfall. Apparently, the waterfall was all dry and this was the second disappointing thing the same day. However, we enjoyed maggi and tea at a small cafe around and it was a pleasant experience altogether with nature’s beauty and cool weather.

The next day was supposed to start with an early trek to Triund which did happen with a small hiccup as we started the trek around 3:30 -4 pm. One of our friends had fallen ill which delayed the schedule and then the trek planners weren’t so sure if we should go as many people were trekking that day. As per the recorded numbers, close to 900+ were already trekking. Still, they somehow managed and we started.

It was already delayed and we had to kind of rush ourselves. By 5:30pm we reached magic point, took a stop for a while and started again. Up till magic point, it was all fine. The trek was not so tough and sun was still bright. Right after we crossed magic point, the roads became more difficult and the sunlight started going away. Ofcouse, we were little scared with paining foot and darker sky.

We did get a guide from our trek planners but sadly after crossing some distance we got to know that he too was going for the first time. Luckily, they plan the trek with about 10 people per group.

So, here comes few tips to handle this situation.

Things you should take care of during your Trekking:

1. Try and remain together with the group of people: We decided to stick to each other, stopped and waited whenever anyone took a halt.

2. Always carry a torch: Gladly all smart phones these days have torch facility but you never know when your phone’s battery might die. Either make sure your phone is full charge or you are carrying a battery back up. It’s always better to have a torch in your bag.

3. Keep talking to your fellow travelers: You always have the luxury of people around. Keep talking to them. Apart from them & during crowed weekends like us, we had an extra advantage of talking to lots of people who were walking back during that hour too. If they were walking back during the evening, probably you still don’t need to worry.

4. Stay hydrated: Keep drinking energy drinks or water and remain hydrated. Be clear there aren’t any washrooms on the way so you should know how to manage at your nature’s call.

5. Stay calm: That’s the only thing that will help. Don’t panic. Relax and keep walking.

So, we reached Triund at about 7:30pm and it was dark. Our so called guide was waiting for us on the starting point, thankfully. He gathered everyone and took us to the place our tents were placed.

Remember, if you are trekking on one of those days when around 900 people are also trekking, chances are high that you won’t get the tent right when you reach the top. You might have to walk on the top of the Triund mountain for good long meters to be able to reach to your tent.

It was really courteous of our trek planners to serve us tea and pakoras when we reached near our tent area and their kitchen. We got our tent, took rest for a while till those guys prepared dinner for us. Dinner was served at about 9pm, till then we looked at the beautiful clear sky full of so many starts which I had always read about back in school time but never in my real life.

And then you feel it was all worth it.

With so many people up, it was obviously difficult for the guides and everyone from the trek planning team to handle and serve meal to everyone. It was very clearly visible. But you know, that’s sometime when you feel, people who have money don’t grow up. They just feel that because they have paid, they should get everything right when they want. There, everybody was rushing in panic, on the door of the kitchen tent to ask for food. All of them calmly said everyone will get, just please ask your guides to come and serve you. Alas, no one was ready to listen to them.

Somehow, everyone managed to get food and we stayed until everyone got and settled down. We had our food and it was all fine. I would not comment on how the food was look at the negative temperature of the location and the humans cooking their. At freezing cold situations, they cooked for us and served. That was all important for me.

After enjoying the good meal and beautiful sky, we went to bed to wake up to a serene morning. At 7:00 am, we woke up fresh and witnessed the most beautiful place on earth. Yes, that’s what you’ll feel at that moment. Nature and it’s charm can’t be seen so easy and I felt, the pain during the trek was all worth for this charm.
I could see snow filled mountains, cool breeze and beautiful tree covered mountains. Snow and tree covered mountains in one view, you just can’t get such a sight anyways that easy.

Triund if one of the most amazing and majestic locations in India and I would say in the world, until I visit any other location which is better than this.

So, after looking at the amazing gorgeous Triund and have breakfast along, we start to trek back to McLeodganj, Dharamsala which took about 3 hours to reach back.

After finishing the trek, we took a halt at a general rest house to freshen up, visited Dalai Lama temple and started to drive back to Delhi.

For all those reading to know more about why and how to plan your trek, please do not forget to carry your winter wears because it’s freezing up there. I can’t tell the temperature and I am not marketing the place, I went to enjoy which I did but keep it in mind that it was damn cold.
